This is one of our absolute favorites! Andrea Iyamah is a Canadian based fashion brand owned by Nigerian designer, Dumebi Iyamah. The brand draws its inspiration from a variety of diverse African cultures as well as nature which shines true in its use of color, cut, and texture.

A.I. is primarily known for its swim and resort lines but the brand also specializes in Ready to Wear pieces and bridal through its sister line Andrea Iyamah Bride!

We personally cannot look at any AI piece without also browsing Google Flights for our next vacation destination; the two go hand in hand!

We thank Dumebi for her modern take on African design tradition. Andrea Iyamah is a fashion staple!

This Brooklyn based brand is owned by Felisha Noel and has been worn by the likes of Beyoncé and Gabrielle Union. Her love for bold colors and prints is very evocative of her Grenadian heritage and the culture of the Caribbean at large. We love her the statements her pieces make – you really cannot miss a Fe Noel piece when you see it.

Felisha has also created the Fe Noel Foundation which is a program designed for young women from underserved communities who are interested in entrepreneurship. The foundation’s mission is to provide direct mentorship and partnership opportunities to bring program participants’ ideas to life.

Felisha demonstrates the importance of giving back to the communities that have inspired and molded us by extending a hand to the next generation. She truly epitomizes the fact that it is always “deeper than fashion.”

One of her most interesting pieces is the Bev Bag a 3D printed bag literally created to hold your beverages (because they do get in the way!)

Brother Vellies is a New York-based brand owned by Aurora James, a Toronto native who recently publicly urged brands to take a 15% pledge, vowing to fill 15% of their shelf-space with Black-owned brands, representative of the fact that Black people are 15% of the population. So far, we’ve seen brands like Sephora and Rent the Runway sign on to her mission.

Brother Vellies originally began with the goal of honoring and sustaining traditional African design techniques as well as supporting artisanal jobs. What makes BV unique is that though its pieces are bold with interesting shapes and prints, they are also timeless and diverse as they honor the origins of the craftsmen who made them.

You can bet your last dollar that your feet will make heads turn wherever you go if you rock a pair of these.

Muehleder is an NYC-based brand by Larissa Muehleder, a Nigerian and Austrian designer who later moved to and grew up in Brooklyn during the 90s.

The creation of this brand stemmed from her desire to use clothing as a means of starting conversation and making a statement during a time where she was literally the new kid on the block.

Muehleder does exactly this as most of its pieces are made of neoprene. Larissa shows us that this “scuba” material does not have to be limited to surfers as she makes dresses and tops with notable cuts and structure. Muehleder has been seen on the likes of Normani, Zendaya, Cardi B, and Issa Rae.
