7 tips to help you transition to fall fashion with ease

Our beloved summer is coming to a close! As the leaves change color and the beaches lose their crowds, it becomes time to start thinking about something critical: what to include in our fall fashion rotation!

Transitioning to fall fashion doesn’t have to be super complicated, nor does it require you to buy an entirely new wardrobe! If you’re looking for some simple ways to use your summer pieces in the fall time or what to buy to make sure that you’re on trend in the fall season, keep reading!

1. Find a cute pair of Booties/Boots

As the days slowly turn colder and we’ve pushed our sandals to the limit, finding cute but stylish footwear will be essential.

In my opinion, the makings of a good boot or bootie are

  1. Comfort: the height of the heel should match the occasion of use
  2. Shape: the fall is the perfect time to play with interesting heel shapes or boot silhouettes! There is no snow on the ground, this is your time to shine!
  3. Color: your footwear can either match your chosen fall color palette or serve as an accent piece, you have the power to decide!

2. Layers

It’s getting closer to the time of year where it’s chilly in the morning and warm by midday. The best way to navigate this is through layering.

That’s right, it’s time to pull out the cute cardigans and blazers that you had hidden in the back of your closet!

When it comes to layering, camis, tanks, and short sleeve tees will be your best friends!

You will also want to look out for quality to ensure that you’ll have pieces that will not only keep you warm but last you for years to come. Some good materials to watch out for while shopping are:

  • merino
  • cotton
  • wool
  • cashmere (skip this on warmer days)

3. switch your color palette

We are all naturally more playful during the summertime. For most of us, warmth = freedom!

When it’s hot it feels safe to wear bold prints and bright colors. As the fall time rolls around, most of us opt for more muted, neutral tones that match the foliage. browns, burgundies, mustards, and burnt oranges, in general, are great for fall.

when in doubt try to match the leaves

4. Try new outfit combinations by mixing summer and fall pieces

Has anyone been loving the midiskirt knee-high boot combo lately?

I feel like most of us, especially those who commute in a chilly city, throw on pants as soon as the temperature drops below 70 but skirts and dresses can still be in your rotation!

As long as you have a sturdy, relatively thick pair of tights or knee-high socks (wool and cashmere are safe options), you should be good to go!

This period of transitional weather is perfect for playing with outfit combinations that you are unable to when it’s too hot or too cold. You probably weren’t wearing boots and blazers in August out of the fear of sweating your life away but now is a prime opportunity to pair your dress with some leather boots or your shorts with a blazer! This window of perfect temperature only lasts so long so be sure to take advantage!

5. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

The key to making any look pop, regardless of weather is a strong accessory game! There will never be a season where I don’t advocate for layering your jewelry but other pieces that you might want to consider adding to the mix are scarves and hats!

Adding a wool hat or blanket scarf to your look will not only make you look extra chic and put together but also keep you extremely warm!

6. Invest in your outerwear

You’re going to be in some form of coat for some time, so why not choose a cute one?

Suede, wool, and leather are all very cute, popular choices for the fall. It may be a good idea, depending on your budget, to have one of each!

A suede biker jacket and a wool peacoat both carry different vibes and you may want a different option depending on the occasion. It’s easy to view your coat simply as a form of protection from the cold weather but it’s something that everyone sees, making it a huge part of your daily look.

No matter what color you go for, be sure that your coat accentuates your look and makes you feel confident! Warmth and style aren’t mutually exclusive! You can always have both.
